(Above) You can be one of the flock, or you can be different:
Sensations Magazine continues set a high standard for independent
publishing without grant funding, while some other literary magazines feared
their goose was finally cooked on July 1, 2003, when the State of New Jersey
threatened to pull all grant funding for the New Jersey State Council on the
Arts. All's well that ends well - other literary magazines can take 1%
of the new state hotel tax to operate. We'd rather not.

David Messineo, the Founder and Executive Editor of Sensations Magazine,
is smiling. With the completion and release of Issue 40, he is 4/5 of the way
toward his lifetime goal of independent publishing: 50 issues across 25
years.
Now, in
an interview originally conducted in 2001 and recently updated, the magazine founder talks at length about his experiences running
Sensations Magazine, comments on the New Jersey poetry scene, and recounts the best experiences in his
years of operating of one America's last truly independent literary
magazines.
