Formal is the sixth published poetry
collection by David Messineo: his first collection of solely form-oriented
poems (sonnets, sestinas, pantoums, villanelles, etc.). The 120-page
hardcover book includes 70 poems, and as a closing section, extensive Author's
Notes about the poetic forms used, and the inspiration for these pieces. Click "Get Info" at upper right for
more details about content description, and "Make Purchase"
for bookstores in the U.S. that stock Formal.
Reviews are coming in for this silver anniversary effort by the New Jersey
poet and performance artist, as follows:
"Formal is a 120-page song of praise to
the craft of poetry. The poet begins simply with an acrostic poem that
spells out a creative and social manifesto that shouts from the first page:
BRAVE STARTS NOW. Within this hardcover volume are poetic forms that
demand precision as well as art. There are all manner of traditional
14-line sonnets ... looking just right is an attitude Messineo effects in other
demanding forms, too, including the aubade, blank verse, canzone, cento,
sestina, and villanelle, among others. In an era when free verse rules as
the dominant form of poetry, Formal reminds the reader that traditional
versification has merit, too. And that tradition transcends eras and
cultures."
- The Home-News Tribune, February 2007
"I received your new book, Formal, and wanted
to get back to you as soon as I had read some of it. I am not only
impressed by the 'in your face-no nonsense' power and depth of your work, but
also love the presentation and look of the book."
- Dennis Wayne Bressack, October 21, 2006
"We want three more copies of Formal. The
teacher who wants two of the books will be contacting you to see if you would
come to the school where she teaches."
- A New Jersey bookstore owner, January 26, 2007
"Formal is a TEN." - Phyllis Jean Green,
