Sensations Magazine
Issue 13: Released
1996

1996New issue releases wind down to just
one . . .
With one issue release and only seven events, it seemed like a relatively
quiet year for Sensations Magazine. (Among our events were a
lecture on Stephen Crane and Coney Island at the Stephen Crane House, Asbury
Park, NJ; a poetry reading at a New Jersey winery; a "Rediscovering America
in Poetry" reading of research findings at an independent bookstore in New
Jersey; and a candlelight reading at the Publisher's home.) But
appearances can be deceiving. Behind the scenes, on consecutive
Saturdays from January to April 1996, we were embedded in the Rare Books &
Manuscripts Division of The New York Public Library, finishing off the research
that would lead to the 1997 articles in the Rediscovering America in Poetry
series. Kleber de Freitas and I had 3-4 other friends and co-workers join
us as guest researchers, one of whom (finally) had a rudimentary laptop.
Some highlights of Issue 13:
 | The 80-page issue contained 20 pages of dramatic black and white and
full-color photography from a variety of contributors |
 | Poets published in 1996 (15): M. Alexander, Moira Bailis, Baloian,
Michael R. Brown, Blair Ewing, Mary Grow, ann... "E." (M.) Horvath, Steven
Koenig, Eugenia Macer-Story, David Messineo, June Owens, Melanie A. Pimont,
Elizabeth Raymond, Dianalee Velie, Galen Warden |
 | Fiction writers published in 1996 (2): Eliot Sekuler, Dianalee Velie |
 | First comprehensive collection of American poetry from 1641-1645 |
 | Guest research article, comparing four versions of Psalm 30, written by
Maude Carolan |
 | First poetry book reviews appear in
Sensations Magazine |
 | Photography by Anthony Alemany, Jorge Cuco, and David Messineo |
By the end of 1996, we would be immersed in a research and typesetting
process that would lead to one of the most prolific years of output in our
history.

Messineo would return to Asbury Park in the 21st century with a series of events
sponsored in that city by Sensations Magazine, from poetry readings and
lectures to the return of live cabaret.
